US trip 2009

The famous San Francisco cable car. There was a big line of tourists waiting to get on it. The cable car doesn't have an engine and can't turn on its own, so they have to put it on a rotating platform and push it manually to turn it around. Lombard st. They call it the crookedest street in the world.
The view from the top of Lombard St. It wasn't much fun climbing up that hill but it was worth it. Hanging off the cable car going to Fisherman's Wharf. You can see Alcatraz in the background. Alcatraz from the peer near Fisherman's Wharf.
This is the size of a small coffee in the US. Yep, it's a little turtle made out of bread. I felt so guilty eating its head. It's from the Boudin bakery at Fisherman's Wharf. They also make alligators, teddy bears, crabs and lobsters. Clam chowder in a bread bowl. Clam chowder is a local San Francisco seafood speciality.
One of the really old refurbished San Francisco trams. Looking at the Bay bridge from the top of Telegraph Hill. Another "fun" climb to get up there. Lots of streets are steep with very uneven pavements like this. Imagine riding a bike down that street or being on a wheelchair :O
The Transamerica pyramid that they often show in movies. Twin peaks. The living roof of the California Academy of Sciences. It looks more like a valley full of blossoming flowers than a roof :)
The other side of the huge roof was covered with solar panels. This was at the California Academy of Sciences natural history museum. Typical street crossing in San Francisco. The count-down is very handy.
Main street of the Castro suburb, the birthplace of gay rights activism. The garden leading up to the golden gate bridge. View of the bridge from the side.
Walking on the bridge. It was starting to get dark so the photos didn't come out well. View from the first pilon of the golden gate bridge. The bridge is the most popular suicide spot in the world and averages about 1 suicide every 2 weeks (though many go unwitnessed so who knows). Queue for the WWDC keynote around 8am. It wrapped around 2 sides of the huge convention centre even though they were letting people in periodically.
Geeks going up the stairs to heaven... They can only go up in small groups now because one year the escalator buckled from the weight. I got a pretty good spot in the keynote. Just second row behind the VIPs. The App Wall at WWDC. It's a 4x3 wall of LCD displays showing the 20000 most popular iphone apps sorted by colour so they form a rainbow. Every time an app is bought it ripples like a raindrop.
Coffee break at WWDC. The Moscone west center. Arizona desert.
Driving through Sedona, Arizona. Some red rocks in Sedona. They're much larger than they look. More Sedona.
Looking down into the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon.
Cute little squirrel asking for food at the edge of the Grand Canyon. Sitting on the edge of the canyon :D
Some people let their 3yo kid alone on that rock. The black dot at the edge of the rock is actually a massive condor. The Colorado river. Looking over the canyon. All the land in the distance is Navaho territory.
